Kuku TV Brings a Microdrama on the Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s life titled ‘Babasaheb’
The historical microdrama explores the making of Bhimrao Ambedkar, from his childhood experiences with caste discrimination to his pursuit of higher education in America
Kuku TV, a leading microdrama platform, is bringing a historical microdrama centred on the formative years of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. The show focuses on a lesser-explored period of his life, before he became the widely recognised architect of the Indian Constitution and a national leader.
Inspired by Ambedkar’s autobiographical account, ‘Waiting for a Visa’, Babasaheb draws on historical incidents and seeks to present this period without fictionalising key events. The microdrama examines the experiences that shaped Bhimrao’s outlook, particularly the caste-based discrimination he faced and the obstacles placed in the way of his education.
Education is central to Bhimrao’s journey in the show. Despite social and financial barriers, his determination to pursue knowledge remains unwavering, eventually taking him to America in 1913. The microdrama presents education not simply as a personal pursuit but also as a means through which Bhimrao begins to challenge inequality and envision a larger purpose.
Interestingly, the show features five actors portraying Ambedkar at different stages of his life, including National Award-winning filmmaker Jayant Somalkar. The other actors include Shirish Pawar, known for Court, who plays Ramji Sakpal; NSD alumnus Snehlata Tagde, who appeared in All We Imagine as Light and plays Jijabai Sakpal; and veteran actor Rajesh Bhonsle, who portrays educator Krishnaji Keluskar. Satchit Puranik, the show's creative producer, also makes a cameo appearance. Members of the cast contribute vocally to the microdrama, performing two Kabir dohas and a folk song.
Babasaheb also combines live-action performances with AI-generated environments and sequences, using the technology to recreate period settings and locations while keeping human actors at the centre of the production. This hybrid approach adds a contemporary production layer to a historical subject.
With Babasaheb, Kuku TV brings a biographical story to the microdrama format, using a compact, mobile-first approach to explore the early experiences that shaped one of India’s most influential figures. The show is now streaming on the Kuku TV app.
